Goddess 'Durga' kept one condition of defeating her in duel. There was huge battle between them which continued for 9 nights. At the end of the ninth night, Goddess 'Durga' killed Mahishasura. Those nine nights are known as Navratri and the tenth day is known as Vijayadashmi.


There is one more myth or legend regarding Navratri. Uma, wife of Lord Shiva visits her father's home during these nine days.

Different region celebrate this festival in different ways. In West Bengal, people celebrate this festival as 'Durga Puja'. They get together in pandaals (a specially decorated gathering place for these nine days). Prepare huge idols of Goddess 'Durga' and performs prayers followed by cultural programs and traditional dance. The popular dress for these celebrations is White Lehenga Choli.
